Every so often, we all stumble into a moment where we think to ourselves, ‘this is what it’s all about’. As a farmer working a heavy clay soil, the biblical amount of rain over the winter eclipsed all such moments. For days on end in the spring, I’d check the headlands to see whether the ground had dried out enough to get machines on it to cut the grass. At the end of May while still agonising about whether to risk cutting silage, I stumbled into one such moment.
